WHEREAS, the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education recognizes Dr. Paul E. Raverta for his significant accomplishments during his 37 years in Massachusetts public higher education, including 31 years at Holyoke Community College as a faculty member and senior-level administrator in a variety of positions including Vice President for Student Development, Vice President for Business and Community Affairs, and Executive Director of the Kittredge Business Center; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Raverta has led Berkshire Community College since September 2005, first as Interim President and then, beginning in January 2008, as President, and in this role has overseen the development of new academic programs in advanced manufacturing and biotechnology; early college opportunities for high school students including the highly effective Positive Options Program; business, community and education partnerships; and the establishment of a new downtown Pittsfield higher education center in collaboration with Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts to better serve the needs of working adults; and

WHEREAS, President Raverta has demonstrated his commitment to the people of Berkshire County by creating the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, which enables mature students to benefit from non-credit courses, lectures, trips and special events at the College, and restoring recreational offerings for students and the community at large by reopening the swimming pool, repairing three abandoned tennis courts, creating two new children’s tennis courts and launching renovations of the Paterson Field House; and

WHEREAS, President Raverta initiated the innovative installation of 1800 solar panels on six campus buildings that will result in Berkshire Community College having the largest roof-mounted installation of its kind at any educational institution in the state; and

WHEREAS, in challenging economic times, President Raverta has shown prudence in repairing the College’s existing infrastructure before seeking new construction and in embarking on voluntary remediation of PCBs in campus buildings to ensure the health and wellbeing of students and staff; and

WHEREAS, President Raverta has enhanced public education statewide through his effective service on Board of Higher Education task forces and committees and through his service as Chair of the Community College Council of Presidents; and

WHEREAS, President Raverta has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to reach out to and touch the hearts and minds of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as the wider county communities where he has served during his tenure in Massachusetts public higher education;

The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education commends Dr. Raverta for his decades of service to Massachusetts public higher education, especially for his deep devotion to students and his commitment to teaching, learning, and scholarship, and congratulates him on the occasion of his retirement from Berkshire Community College.
