Competencies

In response to the challenge of increasing capacity, nursing leaders throughout the country are rethinking the entire process of how nurses are educated in order to identify more efficient and effective education strategies. While 65% of nurses enter the profession through associate degree programs, employers are increasingly demanding a higher level of competency and skills for today’s complex healthcare environment. The NOF Competency Committee has developed a set of core competencies for all professional nurses of the future that are now being used as the framework for nursing curriculum redesign and a statewide transition into practice model. Eight partnerships of nursing programs and their practice partners have been awarded funding to analyze their curriculums and develop plans and new models for curriculum redesign.

Soon after its formation, the NOF Competency Committee began researching competencies obtained from other states, current practice standards, education accreditation standards, and projected patient demographic and healthcare profiles for Massachusetts and drafted a preliminary set of NOF Nursing Core Competencies. These were subsequently vetted with individuals and nursing groups throughout the state. The task force revised the competencies based on feedback and published an updated set of NOF Nursing Core Competencies in August 2010. Simultaneously, the MONE Academic Practice Integration Committee conducted a statewide survey of nurse preceptors to understand the current state of nurse preceptorships and how the NOF Nursing Core Competencies could help guide and improve precepting and transition to practice.

Nursing Core Competency Documents:

The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education (DHE) Nurse of the Future Competency (NOFC) Committee has authored a publication policy pertaining to use of Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies© in publications, presentations, and project materials to support and facilitate dissemination of outcomes from its completed work.

The NOFC Committee requires individuals complete and submit the Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies© Project Materials Tracking and Permission Form to the DHE prior to material usage.

3rd Statewide Nursing Initiative Summit: November 19, 2010

The NOF Competency Committee and the MONE Academic Practice Integration Committee presented the outcomes of their work at a statewide summit on November 19, 2010. Titled Creativity and Connections: Building the Framework for the Future of Nursing Education and Practice: The Future is Now, the summit included presentations by the working committees, a keynote address by Brenda Cleary, PhD, RN, FAAN, director of the AARP Center to Champion Nursing in America, and a breakout session in which summit participants shared their suggestions for next steps toward achieving the NOF mission.
