Commissioner Search Task Force

The Board of Higher Education's Commissioner Search Task Force began a national search for a Commissioner of Higher Education in January 2008. Following the extensive search and interview process, the Task Force forwarded to the Board on November 18, 2008, its recommendation to select Richard M. Freeland, former president of Northeastern University, for the position. The Board of Higher Education voted unanimously on December 5, 2008, to accept the recommendation and forward it to the Secretary of Education for final approval. The recommendation was then approved by Education Secretary Paul Reville, and Freeland began serving as Commissioner on January 20, 2009.

Please note: As of March 10, 2008, the office of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education
was renamed the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education. The name change will be integrated into
prior existing website content gradually over the next few months.
