Curriculum Frameworks with Common Core State Standards
Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
The Commonwealth has an overarching set of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for English Language Arts and Literacy and Mathematics for all preK-12 districts. There are curriculum frameworks for English Language Arts and Literacy, Mathematics, History and Social Science, Science and Technology/Engineering, the Arts, Foreign Languages, and Comprehensive Health.
Common Core State Standards
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort to improve academic standards and assessments in English language arts/literacy and mathematics to ensure all high school students graduate with the knowledge and skills most demanded by college and careers. The Common Core State Standards have been adopted by 45 states and the district of Columbia and were adopted in Massachusetts in June 2010. The shared set of educational standards is internationally benchmarked.
How They Intersect
In December 2010, the Massachusetts Boards of Elementary and Secondary Education and Early Education and Care adopted new preK-12 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for English Language Arts and Literacy and Mathematics which incorporated the Common Core State Standards.
All Massachusetts preK-12 public school districts are expected to implement the new standards for English Language Arts and Literacy and Mathematics by the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.
