Optional Retirement Program
The Optional Retirement Program (ORP) is an alternative to the State Employees’ Retirement System that provides flexible and portable retirement benefits for most employees at the Commonwealth’s public institutions of higher education and the Department of Higher Education. The ORP is an integral part of the Commonwealth's efforts to recruit and retain the strongest candidates for positions at these institutions.
ORP Benefits at a Glance
The Optional Retirement Program provides these benefits:
- Retirement Income
Funded by employee and employer plan contributions. - Long-Term Disability Insurance (for Active Participants only)
This coverage is separate from the disability insurance offered by the GIC. Premiums are paid by the Commonwealth. - Group Term Life Insurance (for Active Participants only)
This coverage is separate from the life insurance offered by the GIC. Premiums are paid by the Commonwealth.
