Events That May Affect ORP Insurance Coverage

A Participant is no longer eligible for ORP Group Life and Long-Term Disability Insurance if:

  • his/her workload in a covered position is reduced to a level below the minimum required in Mass. General Laws Chapter 32 (50% FTE);
  • he/she takes a leave of absence without pay; or
  • he/she terminates employment with the Commonwealth.

A Participant may or may continue to be eligible for ORP Group Life and Long-Term Disability Insurance if:

  • he/she takes a military leave of absence under certain circumstances. More information is available in the Participants' section of this website.
  • he/she takes a non-military leave of absence under certain circumstances. More information is available in the Participants' section of this website.

Calculating Insurance Coverage End Dates

Group Life and Long-Term Disability Insurance coverage ends at the end of the month for which the final premium is paid. The premiums are paid when the Plan Administrator calculates and remits the Employer Matching Contribution. This is usually done one week after the close of each biweekly payroll cycle.

In cases where ORP Participants terminate employment at the end of the spring semester, yet remain on the payroll through August for the “balance of their contract” payments, the final premium would likely be paid in September. In these cases, the Participants’ insurance coverage would end on September 30.
