Frequently asked questions

Transfer

Can I transfer to any Massachusetts post-secondary institution?
Virtually all public and independent institutions in Massachusetts may accept transfer
students. Keep in mind that admission may be competitive for some programs and that
Massachusetts’ transfer policies only apply to public institutions. However, many community
colleges have transfer articulation agreements with private colleges so check with your
transfer advisor.

Can I transfer courses from more than one institution?
Yes. Remember, you must submit official transcripts from each institution you attended. In
addition, some courses may transfer but may not meet program requirements for graduation.

What are articulation agreements?
Every community college has formal agreements (articulation agreements) with various four-year institutions, both public and private, that specify admissions requirements guaranteeing acceptance and/or transfer of community college courses. Requirements may vary from school to school, and agreement to agreement. Check with the individual college to find out about these agreements.

Joint Admissions

Who qualifies for Joint Admissions?
Any student enrolled in an approved joint admissions transfer program at a Massachusetts community college who earns an associate degree with a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average is eligible.

What are the benefits of graduating from an approved Joint Admissions program at a community college with a 2.5 or higher GPA?
Joint Admissions students who graduate with a 2.5 or higher GPA are guaranteed admission to the University of Massachusetts and to participating state colleges (all except Massachusetts College of Art and Design). Joint Admissions students have equal access to specific majors, registration for courses, assignment to junior status, and degree program requirements as “native” students. Joint Admissions students who wish to be admitted to a major that requires specific courses or grades must meet those requirements.

What is the enrollment process for Joint Admissions approved programs at a state college or at the University of Massachusetts?
A student must complete and submit an intent to enroll form (.DOC) and transcripts from the community college and high school to the admissions office at the state college or University of Massachusetts where admission is sought. The priority deadline for fall entrance is March 1 (February 15 at Framingham State College) and October 15 for spring entrance.

What commitment is made to the state college or University of Massachusetts campus?
None. Enrolling in a Joint Admissions program is not binding in any way.
