Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvement Act of 2010

Massachusetts student veterans attending the state’s public colleges and universities will continue to have their tuition and mandatory fees paid in full, while students at private colleges and universities may realize a modest increase in benefits under the terms of the Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvement Act of 2010 signed into law by President Obama on January 3, 2011.

The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education (DHE), designated by law as the State Approving Agency (SAA) responsible for approving and supervising educational and training programs for veterans and their beneficiaries under the Veterans Education Assistance Program, has reviewed the changes in the Chapter 33 legislation and concluded the following with regard to tuition and fees at degree-granting institutions in the Commonwealth:

  • Undergraduates attending public institutions in Massachusetts will not experience any changes. Tuition and mandatory fees will continue to be paid in full.
  • Students attending private institutions may receive several thousand more dollars per year under the new legislation, depending on their educational expenses.
  • Graduate students attending public institutions in Massachusetts may experience an increase in benefits.
