FAQ

The following questions provide an overview of education benefits and the application process.

Getting Started

What sources provide overview information?
Military.com: An overview of educational benefit programs for veterans
Military.com: How to apply for GI Bill benefits

Whom do I contact at the colleges?
Many schools have a Veterans' Office that can help qualified veterans process their benefit claims. In some cases, the institution's Veterans' Representative resides within the financial aid or admissions office. Visit the college's website for contact information.

Veterans should contact the learning establishment and identify themselves as a person looking to use GI Bill or tuition waiver benefits. The veteran should ask if the establishment is approved to teach veterans under the GI Bill program. If the establishment is approved, the veteran should schedule a meeting with the appropriate financial aid counselor or Veterans' Representative to complete the claim paperwork.

Approved Schools

What schools are currently approved?
Review the Department of Veterans Affairs Approved Education Programs. Offsite link

What should I do if I want to use my benefits at a school not on the approved list?
Contact the school and indicate that you are a veteran who would like to use your GI Bill benefits at their institution. The school will need to complete an application for approval. Applications can be requested via letter at:

The Office of Veterans' Education
454 Broadway, Suite 200
Revere, MA  02151

Once a completed application is received and reviewed by the Board of Higher Education's Office of Veterans' Education, a visit to the school will be scheduled. If the educational program meets the established requirements, the school will be approved and will allow veterans to use their benefits at the institution.
