Bristol Community College

Bristol Community College Grimshaw-Gudewicz Gallery Celebrates Faculty Work

October 12, 2007: The Bristol Community College Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery opens its second art faculty exhibition on November 1, 2007. By bringing together many of the faculty who currently teach in the art and design programs at the College, the exhibit celebrates the working artists who actively exhibit their work through regional, national, and international venues and teach in the vibrant programs at Bristol Community College. The exhibit opens on with a reception on November 1,2007, and runs until December 14, 2007. The reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

Bunker Hill Community College

BHCC Professor Cited by Governor for Contributions to the Commonwealth

October 1, 2007: Bunker Hill Community College Behavioral Sciences Professor Aurora B. Bautista has been named a recipient of this year's Manuel Carballo Governor's Award for Excellence in Public Service. Dr. Bautista is being recognized, in the words of Governor Deval Patrick, "for selflessly personifying a deep commitment to serving the people of the Commonwealth."

Cape Cod Community College

Falmouth High School and Cape Cod Community College Jointly Launch “The College Connection Program”

October 3, 2007: Committed to increasing the number of high school graduates going on to higher education, The College Connection Program has been launched jointly by Falmouth High School and Cape Cod Community College. On October 3, 2007, over 100 parents and supporters of the Falmouth High School Senior Class met with College officials and Falmouth school system leadership to learn about this comprehensive college awareness, admission and advising support effort.

Framingham State College

Vice President Philip Dooher Retires After 36 Years

August 2007: Vice President for Enrollment Management Philip M. Dooher retired after more than 36 years of service to Framingham State College. Dooher came to FSC as a financial aid officer, served as director of financial aid, director of admissions and dean of admissions, vice president of enrollment management, and was twice appointed interim president.

Greenfield Community College

New Grant Brings GCC's "Green" Courses to Local High Schools

Summer 2007: Greenfield Community College has received a $50,000 grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative to train local high school teachers how to go green in their classes. The grant will fund stipends and supplies costs for teachers from four local schools to take courses at GCC that teach renewable energy technology techniques and theories. The goal of the project is to create a cohesive renewable energies curriculum that spans from high school to college.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design

Massachusetts College of Art and Design to Award Master of Architecture

October 25, 2007: The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education has unanimously approved the application of Massachusetts College of Art and Design to award the Master of Architecture. After three years of program development, including a review and site visit by the National Architecture Accrediting Board, the college is now poised to offer a 60-credit graduate degree designed to provide rigorous, accessible, and affordable professional preparation for a variety of architecture-centered careers.

Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts

MCLA President Mary K. Grant to Lead Subcommittee for Governor's Readiness Project Leadership Council

September 18, 2007: Governor Deval Patrick has named Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) President Mary K. Grant to lead an education panel for the Readiness Project Leadership Council. Governor Patrick unveiled his vision for a comprehensive, child-centered public education system in June. The project will create a ten-year strategic plan to improve public education in the Commonwealth from preschool to college and higher education, also to include work force development and lifelong learning.

Middlesex Community College

Middlesex Community College Hosts WWII Japanese-American Internment Camp Veteran

October 9, 2007: The Middlesex Community College One World Series hosted Glenn Kumekawa, a leading public-planning expert and veteran of a World War II relocation camp for Japanese-Americans. Kumekawa's appearance coincided with Ken Burns' epic WWII PBS documentary, The War, which recently aired nationally. It was also offered in conjunction with MCC's 2007-08 Common Book, Julie Otsuka’s When The Emperor Was Divine. Otsuka's acclaimed first novel is the fictionalized account of how one West Coast Japanese-American family is affected by the events of World War II.

Mount Wachusett Community College

Senators Kerry, Kennedy, Announce $250,000 Upward Bound Math and Science Grant to MWCC
September 7, 2007: Senators John Kerry and Edward Kennedy announced that Mount Wachusett Community College will receive a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Upward Bound Math and Science Program. The goal of the Upward Bound Math and Science Program is to help students develop their potential in math and science and encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in these subject areas.

Northern Essex Community College

NECC’s New Building in Lawrence to be Named in Honor of North Andover Entrepreneur

October 9, 2007: The Northern Essex Community College Board of Trustees recently voted unanimously to recommend to the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education that the college's proposed Allied Health & Technology Center be named the Dr. Ibrahim El-Hefni Allied Health and Technology Center. The Technical Training Foundation, a foundation started by the late Dr. El-Hefni, has pledged to donate one million dollars to the building to be used for equipment for student programs.

Quinsigamond Community College

QCC Inaugurates its Fifth President

September 28, 2007: Quinsigamond Community College held its inauguration ceremony for Dr. Gail E. Carberry, who assumed the presidency in August 2006. She is the College’s fifth president and second woman to hold the title. A native of Worcester, she graduated from Worcester State College with a degree in education and taught in the Worcester Public Schools. After moving to Springfield, she enrolled at Springfield Technical Community College, where she graduated with a certificate in small business management. She went on to the University of Massachusetts, where she completed her master’s degree with specialization in faculty development and strategic planning.

University of Massachusetts

Hoff family creates largest-ever UMass scholarship program

September 19, 2007: the University of Massachusetts announced the creation of the largest privately financed scholarship program in its history with the receipt of a new $3 million gift from UMass Lowell alumnus and former UMass Trustee Charles J. Hoff and his wife Josephine Hoff. The new gift brings the Hoffs' lifetime giving to the University to $5.5 million and, with matching funds included, creates a $10 million Charles J. Hoff Scholarship program that benefits students on all five UMass campuses.
