Should you complete FAFSA or MASFA ?

To be eligible for most types of financial aid, students must complete either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Massachusetts Application for State Financial Aid (MASFA). Students should only complete ONE financial aid application. If you are unsure which form to complete, please answer the questions below. Based on the answers provided, you will be instructed to complete either the FAFSA or MASFA.

Do you have a Social Security Number?

Are you a US Citizen or US National?

Are you an eligible noncitizen? For example, do you have a Permanent Resident Card (green card) or a qualifying Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) or are you a conditional permanent resident (I551C)?

Have you been granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or Temporary Protected Status (TPS) by US Citizenship and Immigration Services? Find more information about DACA and TPS on the USCIS website.

Did you attend at least three years of high school in Massachusetts and earn your high school diploma (or equivalent) in Massachusetts?

Based on your responses, you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for federal and Massachusetts state financial aid programs.

Based on your responses, you are eligible to file the Massachusetts Application for State Financial Aid (MASFA). PLEASE NOTE: to be eligible for Massachusetts State Financial Aid programs, you must also be physically living in Massachusetts for at least 12 months prior to start of the academic year for which you are applying for financial aid.

Complete the 2025-2026 application if you plan to enroll in college during the 2025-2026 academic school year (July 1, 2025- June 30, 2026).

Complete the 2026-2027 application if you plan to enroll in college during the 2026-2027 academic school year (July 1, 2026- June 30, 2027). Application will be available November 2025.

Based on your responses, you are NOT eligible for federal or Massachusetts state financial aid. You should NOT complete the FAFSA or MASFA. We encourage you to contact the Financial Aid Office of the college/university you plan to attend to ask about other financial aid resources that may be available.
