Transfer of Benefits

Eligibility

Any member of the Armed Forces on or after August 1, 2009, who is eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, has at least six years of service at time of transfer request, and agrees to incur an additional service obligation as defined below:

At least 6 years, but less than 10 4 years from the date the request is submitted
10 or more years 4 years or up to Retention Control Point or Mandatory Retirement date from the date request is submitted, whichever is less.

Eligibile Dependents

Eligible dependents include:

Family member must be enrolled in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS) and be eligible for benefits at the time of transfer to receive transferred education benefits.

Nature of Transfer

An eligible Service member may transfer up to the total months of unused Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, or the entire 36 months if the member has used none (unless DoD/DHS limits the number of months an individual may transfer).
