STEM Starter Academy has been supporting community college STEM students earn degrees and certificates since 2014. The Department of Higher Education wants to continue to support community college students in their education as they pursue bachelor’s degrees at one of our public 4-year institutions.
Students transferring from one of the fifteen community colleges in Massachusetts and transferring to a state college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field are welcome to apply to a Summer Transfer Academy program. These programs will either run in-person or virtually, depending on the status of social distancing and campus policy at that time.

Aug. 19 – Dec. 21: UMass STEM College Check-In’s, Virtual: UMass STEM Summer Bridge Representatives from the 3 colleges will reach out to students to check in during 1st half of semester and will monitor for ‘early alerts’ from course instructors in order to provide intervention for student success. In-person: Representatives from each college will hold in-person lunch/meal card meet up, in order to meet up with students. The goal will be to discuss how the semester is going and to offer resources, if needed.
Sept. 6 – Dec. 21:Transfer Student Seminar and Mentoring, In-person - Students in the
College of Engineering will be encouraged to enroll in a 1 credit transfer student seminar that meets once a week. Mentors will be available to work with
students during the last 20 minutes of class.
